I think familiarity and understanding run as deep as they come: they make you appreciate what to others may be simply admirable, nothing more. Friday night we saw the New York City Ballet perform for the first time. As a former dancer and 15 years of french terminology, technique, and barre warm-ups memorized by heart, I was anxious to see what one of the world’s top ballet company’s was like compared to my small town training. The David H. Koch theatre was beautiful, the company’s performances even more so. I left the theatre missing ballet and pointe shoes, appreciating the years I spent studying the art.
